… yesterday’s class was the end of my first week back to school at Chulalongkorn University. Going back to school for my Master of Architecture is amongst the best things I have ever chosen to do thus far. Getting to know new people, exploring our differences and making new friends is just fun. The class was about the Methodology for Research that will help under understand how to do research properly. Aside from that, we were taught and asked to be more of a Grad-Student rather than an undergrad-Student by using vocabulary that are suitable for a Master Degree candidate.

Therefore, it seem that I may not be allowed to simply use the word “beautiful” to describe the scenery of the Zen garden and the serenity pool at Arashiyama 嵐山 – Kyoto 京都. As a result, I find the garden and to pool to be very …

admirable, alluring, angelic, appealing, beauteous, bewitching, charming, classy, comely, cute, dazzling, delicate, delightful, divine, elegant, enticing, excellent, exquisite, fair, fascinating, fine, foxy*, good-looking, gorgeous, graceful, grand, handsome, ideal, lovely, magnificent, marvelous, nice, pleasing, pretty, pulchritudinous, radiant, ravishing, refined, resplendent, shapely, sightly, splendid, statuesque, stunning, sublime, superb, symmetrical, taking, well-formed, wonderful

Even though the list are made of synonyms, it is very amazing to see how many words are out there that can also describes the meaning of “beautiful”. Just like in nature, there are so many things out there for us to appreciate and the Japanese have done it superbly, indeed!

I believed that the paths were created to make it harder to access the Bamboo Forest; not to test the visitor’s endurance but to allow them to enjoy the beautiful scenery that Arashiyama has to offer! If we were to walk a straight path from the parking lot to the Bamboo Forest, it would probably take us about 10 minutes to get there. The path has instead detoured us for perhaps an additional 40 minutes, but it made it a walk to remember.

The path lead us along a river with colored autumn leaves on the hillside across the river. Enjoying nature’s serenity amongst the simple and peaceful local lifestyle made the walk extra memorable! Every step, every turn, and every view we had along the walk is simple, yet very stunning. The selection of the materials used along the walkway and the colorful autumn leaves have made the walk akin to strolling in a work of art.

Sometimes enjoying life isn’t all about getting to the desired destination as quickly as we can… because getting detoured… isn’t always just a detour!

Live life! Be lost… and enjoy the detour!

The seasonal circle of Spring – Summer – Autumn – Winter… is just an amazing life lesson. Japan’s weather and seasons may be seen as a life cycle or a moment in life where there are moments to begin, moments to enjoy, moments to remember and moments that end.
…we can be sure that the moments to enjoy and to remember will be return.

Once I came to understand the concept of the differences in perspectives and viewpoints of people, it became so much harder for me to be so judgmental towards others. Because everyone has their reasons to do whatever it is they want to do, some of us may never understand because we are not in the situation they are in. But sometimes, we just do whatever everyone is doing without knowing why we are doing it too! Yup, this is life and there is so much more to discover.

Sometime I think that everything in life can be seen as Newton’s laws of motion as follows:

Newton’s laws of motion are three physical laws that form the basis for classical mechanics. They describe the relationship between the forces acting on a body and its motion due to those forces. They have been expressed in several different ways over nearly three centuries, and can be summarized as follows:

First law: The velocity of a body remains constant unless the body is acted upon by an external force.

Second law: The accelerationa of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net forceF and inversely proportional to themassm, i.e., F = ma.

Third law: The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear.

I’m certain that anyone would come into an agreement that these laws do apply in life as well! We just have to find the perspective to see it.

The photo presented today was taken at the Bamboo Forest 竹林 in Kyoto 京都 – Arashiyama 嵐山. Like everyone else, I just took a photo of what is in front of, behind, to the left, or to the right…

Not until I looked up!

And I just love this new perspective, looking up!

Till we meet again!

It is currently 2:00 am here in Osaka, Japan but I would like to stay awake as much as possible to absorb all the Japanese’ness before it is too late!

The trip is part of the Masters of Architecture of Chulalongkorn University field trip; visiting Osaka University to exchange ideas and research topics on architecture. Let’s skip the academic stuff because… you know how technical and boring it may be! But because of this academic discussion between the universities, we get to explore so many aspects that Kyoto, Osaka and Japanese culture have to offer!

The experiences are priceless! Many of the places that we visited were on my “places to visit before it’s too late” list! The Bamboo Forest is definitely on the list along many other places that I have unexpectedly visited these passed few days.

Life is just amazing, a journey to take, places to discover, cultures to explore and memories that last. Simply PRICELESS!

Tomorrow I’ll be going for 6-months to boot camp. The boot camp has been waiting for me since I was 21.

I haven’t had much time to write or any chance to take many photos these past months due to “things” that had to be handled prior to me departing to boot camp.

Hopefully this boot camp will help me get fit & firm up my aging body.

The boot camp schedule includes 10 weeks of basic military training, 1 week of rest and another 13 weeks of working “somewhere,” as they see fit. Hopefully, I’ll have some time off to update www.TwoStepsBehind.com now and then.

The hardest part, in my opinion, is the basic training that includes running, sit-ups, push-ups, digging a hole, climbing fences… etc. Yup, that is a real challenge for me, a person that hasn’t been working out for years.

Well, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do!

That’s just how life is… just like a tree that has to withstand anything that comes along.

Just a few weeks ago, my friends and I went on a trip to Kanchanaburi, a province 2-3 hours away west of Bangkok. Our main goal was to go visit a temple that allows for an amazing tiger experience! The destination was “Wat Pa Luangta Bua- www.tigertemple.org” where we can spend our time with TIGERS up close, REALLY CLOSE! I mean, you can literally hug, pat, take pictures or anything with these tigers. I won’t get much into detail of it because… we were 15 minutes too late and the gate keeper wouldn’t let us in. Oh well, maybe next time.
And for that, we went to the Elephant Village nearby instead. The 30 minutes ride was very down to earth… it felt much longer than 30 minutes and we were glad that we didn’t take the 60 minutes tour ride. It wasn’t bad, but it was very tiring to hang on to the seat on the elephant back. The tour started of with a walk through a small jungle, then to the elephant rider’s village and to finish the tour off by a dip into the river near by. A very fun trip indeed!

Try it for yourselves!

These are flying foxes.

A one day family trip (about 120 of us!) last week was truly exhausting from simply eating, taking nasp on the bus and taking photos from time to time. For this trip, we went to Chaochoengsao, a city about an hours drive east of Bangkok.

We went to so many places in the city that by the end of the day I thought it was a 5 day trip! As for today’s post, one of the most interesting places that our family visit is at the Temple, Wat Pho because it is where theses flying foxes have resided for years.

I vaguely remember some of this information provided by our tour guide.

Full grown flying foxes can weight up to 800 grams and will fly for miles to find food, particularly fruit. The legend goes that these flying foxes are really intelligent and sensitive (or so they say that these flying foxes can understand human language) as there was one time that the temple were trying to hold a 9 days festival. The villager kept saying that who would come to this temple with all these flying foxes since their smell is unbearable! For some unexplainable reason, these flying foxes flew away a day before the festival began, allowing the temple to clean up the place and returned to the temple a day after the festival ended. Not one of them was present during the festival time.

Another story is that, the flying foxes are very emotionally sensitive and attached to the abbot of the temple. During and after the funeral of the abbot, these flying foxes start to drop dead without cause. The story was told that the abbot invited these flying foxes to reside here in the temple years ago. So they believe that the cause of death could be… grieving to death.

When I heard that we are going to see the flying foxes, I thought of just a few of them hanging around the tree. But I couldn’t be more wrong, there were hundreds of them! Another interesting phenomena is that, these flying foxes will only reside within the walls of the temple. This place is just so cool!

More info about the city, please visit http://www.chachoengsao.go.th/th/

I know it is hard to believe… but there how would you explain this? It is snowing right outside of the Sutton hotel in Bangkok. This is the view on Silom Street, for those who are familiar with Bangkok, this should very easy to recognize. So, what is going on with the weather? As mention on a few day before about the unpredictable weather that was in Spain. And now it is snowing in Bangkok! What is next?

I can’t believe that this is actually happening! Snowing in Bangkok? No way! And if you are really familiar with Bangkok, then you would know that… this is NOT Bangkok, duh !!! So there is no Snow in Bangkok, take it easy… our planet is fine, don’t worry about it.

Hey! Don’t blame me for this… my cousin, Benz, send me a message saying that it is snowing in Bangkok and I totally believed it. Now I am just passing on the foolishness, just for today. Happy April Fool Day !!!! ^_^

Okay, now you got to make up your own story to pass on the message for April Fool Day.

For the picture… it is indeed the view from the Sutton hotel’s balcony that I stay with my friends. I took this picture after the New Year countdown at “Glow Ball”, a few block from the hotel. It was the first time that I actually see and feel the snow falling, a real snow, from the sky… and it was during the first hour of 2009. Amazing memory!!!

It was from the movie “P.S. I LOVE YOU”

after i watched that movie, yesterday it reminded me of this picture that i took on the new year. Actually it is the same day that i took the “First sunset of the year, in Vancouver 01.01.09″. I imagine that, it would have been nice to have someone to sit there, together and just be there for each other, doing nothing, worry about nothing, just be happy.

I don’t think that it is too much to ask for, or is it?

Currently, I am living in Marbella, Spain. The closet beach we have here is Port Banus… as most of my friends know that I have addiction with Beach… Sand, Sound, Sea, Wave, and Wind. But here, in Vancouver… the dock is to the far right behind the bridge. Here, it is very unique in such a way that I cannot really explain. It was freezing cold at the moment I took the picture, 2 degree celcious, but I just really want to capture this moment.

I mentioned that it is very unique to me because I get the beach feeling here without the sand, or wave. There were only wind and coldness… but it was the peacefulness that capture me.

Looking at it further., it reminded me of my childhood when the only game I play was Tertis because those line of building look exactly just like in the game. Don’t you think?

Back to the first day of the year, January 1, 2009 (duhh) Cold, yes!!! very cold… I wasn’t prepare for this much coldness!!! Anyway, that day was a great walk, it must have spent about 5 hours walking in the snow, brown snow… sometime yellow snow. Eww. From this location that I took the picture, it took me about 30 minutes or so to get down to the flag because I wasn’t wearing proper shoes, I had a tennis shoe on… no waterproof— nada! Walking to the flag wasn’t easy at all since I keep sinking into the snow that was about knee deep.

Ohh, I post this picture today because I read an article about the Winter Game 2010 and it is going to be in Vancouver. Great place, great choice, and great location for olympic. There were so much to see, to do, to eat, and to explore here in Vancouver. We were there for only 3 days 2 nights, and it wasn’t long enought for us to do much. Well, we get to countdown in Vancouver… and after that, I get to experience the snow “actually snowing from sky, real one (not man made one like in Big Bear California)” for the first time in my life. And it was right after the year start!!! Amazing experience, great way to start my year!!!.

Okay, are you ready for Vancouver? Less than 12 months from now, is the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Game in Vancouver. Here is their official website Vancouver 2010.

Finally, the event, The Tale of Four Cities, is over. that reminded me of how the 2008 ended. To get this event happen, we, us Post Graduate student, had many problems during the planning, lots of drama… just like everything else we do in life. Yet, we pull it thru. It doesn’t matter what the problems are because the main point is that we must get it done, at whatever cost. The most problems that I noticed during the management were, the lack of respect between and with in each department, the inability to make decision, problem moving on to the next subject and so on… These were the thing that happen during our event and I don’t see that they were a bad things, because “every problems are opportunities”. They are opportunities to reflect ourselves in those situation and how can we improve ourselves if these were to happen in “real” world situation. So yes, better happened now rather than later in our career.

Just like a sun that would rise and set everyday, our life… not that different from the sun. There are time that we will rise, and there are time that we will be down, but that won’t last forever because we will again … RISE and SHINE to continue fighting “The battle”.

One day at a time.

I really don’t know, but the only thing I am certain of is that I am doing my best every single step of the way. With Hope, Love, and Faith… I will keep walking forward to the unknown, I will only be two steps behind.

With that mood, today I chose this picture. A picture that was taken somewhere in Canada on the way back to United State’s border. I wonder, where would that take me if I were to keep walking toward the mountain where the golden light are shining, how long will it take, will I be able to make it, and why do I want to go there?

Curiosity, will take you to many places but it is Hope, Love, and Faith that will guide you to the destination… and with that “the well will never runs dry”

on Sunday, I did some study at the school balcony… bathing in the sun for an hour or so. Then in the afternoon, the weather suddenly change from sunny to cloudy and windy, from hot to cold and chilly. Talking about the weather here in Marbella, Spain, it is strange !!! Is it really the work of global warming but what happened was that weeks ago it was raining all week long, and then it get hot for another week, and then suddenly we have hail storm for a day… sigh…

That is how I started looking for pictures taken during New Year’09 in Vancouver, Canada because the weather and the cloud resemble the day that I visit Vancouver. Above is the Panorama of Vancouver on the bridge that lead to the “Tertisland” (another photo that I took from the port, below to the left of the picture) In that picture, you would see the bridge that I am standing on to take this picture ^_^

The experience was amazing as I am standing in the between the 2 world, one side full of building and its dynamic energy while the other side is more of a nature, nice and calm. It’s create the perfect harmony during the moment on the bridge where everything seem to be balance out with the melody from the sky.

It has been so long that I wanted to start a photoblog, finally it is up! Thank you to WordPress and DreamHost for making it so easy to start a blog and organize everything without having to do all those FTP thing.

So I would like to start of with the picture that I took on January 01, 2009. After a long night counting down and all, I get up early in the morning and take bus to where ever it would take me and has come accross this bridge. It was 2 celcius and it was my first time in a city with snow. So I was only wearing a tennis shoes, jean, and tons of cloth on. With that tennis shoe, it wasn’t enough as I keep getting sink into the snow ground that was a knee deep! Okay, so it took me a while to get off those snow ground and get on this bridge. And viola!

The plan is to keep posting at least 1 image per day from my photos archive. Please feel free to comment. And don’t forget to stop by for more update.

*a quick notice… I am no english major, so cut me some slack on the sentencing and grammar and just enjoy the photos ^_^

It’s has been so hot in Marbella lately and most of my post the past week just keep reminding me of how hot the weather is. Enough of the hot weather for now, I know it is nice but I need to cool down just a bit before I’ll melt. So one way for myself to cool down is to close my eye and think of that cold cold place and that is how it reminded me of a picture that I took in North Vancouver. The same day that I took the picture for “a moment that I say -nothing-”

This week I will be travelling to Valencia, Spain and also going to Granada to visit the Alhambra that I missed out on the last trip. Valencia… hum, I would really like to stop by The Hemispheric at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) by Santiago Calatrava, Valencia, Spain.

Can’t wait to be there! Why? Personal obssesion with Santiago Calatrave’s work… just because, they are awesome!

Never the less it was worth capturing the memory, the moment, and the feeling.

There’s no combination of words
I could put on the back of a postcard
No song that I could sing

With sepiatone loving
Love is the answer,
At least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it’s so hard?
It’s not always easy and
Sometimes life can be deceiving
I’ll tell you one thing it’s always better when we’re together

[Chorus:]
MMM it’s always better when we’re together
Yeah, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together
Well, it’s always better when we’re together
Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together

And all of these moments
Just might find their way into my dreams tonight
But I know that they’ll be gone
When the morning light sings
And brings new things
For tomorrow night you see
That they’ll be gone too
Too many things I have to do
But if all of these dreams might find their way
Into my day to day scene
I’d be under the impression
I was somewhere in between
With only two
Just me and you
Not so many things we got to do
Or places we got to be
We’ll Sit beneath the mango tree now

It’s always better when we’re together
Mmmm, we’re somewhere in between together
Well, it’s always better when we’re together

I couldn’t update my phone regularly via iTune because it locked to a US mobile carrier. If I were to update it normally, as I did once… the one expression I’d have is just… “EEK!” So I bring my phone to a shop at MBK, tell them my situation and they have it taken care of within the hour. Yes!!! Now I can CUT and PASTE! What else is good about 3.0? Ahh yes there is an application that allows me to BLOG on the iPhone! Sweet!

I still don’t know why the website’s server is so unstable that it is unavailable most of the time! Sigh…

Now the picture was taken at Vancouver, Canada just a few minutes after midnight on New Year 2009. It was my VERY first snow experience ever in my life! The falling snow feel greats… but the snow on the ground, does NOT!

The island also known as the Nail Island. The picture was taken on Christmas of 2009; the same day that I was reunited and met many of my long lost family members. It was the family trip that I must have mentioned on previous posts.

Looking back a year to date… there are many changes in the way I process pictures, which hopefully have improved greatly. A year ago, I believed that there would be a day that I could take a nice landscape shot, a panorama of some sort… as my very first post at TwoStepsBehind, Hello Planet Earth, Welcome to Two Steps Behind!, was a panorama of the Vancouver Bridge, Canada. That belief… brought me to where I am today… with the photo which I am really proud of. To me it’s a really big step that was made of many small steps.

A year has passed and I couldn’t believe how much things have changed… or at least just me.

There was so much to learn in a year, and I can say for certain that life is…

to Live and Learn…
to keep going forward…
to give and to love unconditionally

and most important of it all…

to never lose hope.
because I do still believe strongly that, hope achieves the impossible.

In celebration of 1 year anniversary of TwoStepsBehind… I am going to make a slide show, when I have time, to see where has TwoStepsBehind has visited. I know that Apple has those cool programs, iMovie, iDvd… etc to make the globe spin from one place to the next. Let us see how would that turn out!

But first things first… I must thank you everyone for visiting this website…
First of all, my mother for making me realize that I should write a blog so that she could keep up with my where abouts.
Secondly, Qi for gifted me with “HALF” of the Canon Rebel XSI for my Bachelor of Architecture graduation present.

Thirdly, SCI_Arc for exposing me to the world of APPLE and MACBOOK PRO

Forth, WordPress + Flickr + Facebook + iPhoto… for making it so easy to blog.
Last but not least… is Trey, the god of HDR for sharing his tutorial at www.StuckInCustoms.com which became a great inspiration for me. Thank you to all of my reader to continuing reading many if not most of my non-sense posts!

THANK YOU!!!

Cheers… on to the next and many more year to come!
